The National Mosque of Nusantara Capital (IKN) was conceptually designed by NuArt Consultant, the winner of the national competition for the mosque’s basic design. Under the direction of its founder, Nyoman Nuarta, the project embodies a contemporary interpretation of Islamic spiritual and cosmological values through monumental and symbolic architecture.
The main concept draws inspiration from the swirl of the Prophet’s turban, the tawaf movement, and the spiral of the Milky Way galaxy, unified within a circular and dynamic roof form that symbolizes humanity’s connection with the Creator.
NuArt Consultant designed the IKN National Mosque with a vision to present a modern Islamic architectural icon that represents peace and diversity. The design envisions not only a place of worship but also a spiritual hub open to all communities. Its architectural philosophy combines cosmological meaning and the essence of monotheism reflected through structure, light, and spatial composition.
The IKN National Mosque accommodates approximately 60,000 worshippers, making it one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia. Its spiral-based design flows from the main plaza into the prayer hall, evoking the movement of tawaf around the Ka’bah. The main dome is built from steel structures clad in reflective metal panels that capture natural light throughout the day.
The design philosophy stems from the 99 Names of Allah (Asmaul Husna), translated into 99 columns and rhythmic façades symbolizing humility and cosmic order. Light plays a vital role: natural illumination enters through spiral openings that guide visitors toward the central prayer space.
The conceptual and basic design was carried out by NuArt Consultant, while the DED and construction stages were executed by KSO Hutama Karya – Adhi Karya in collaboration with Alien DC as technical consultant. Several local partners contributed to the structural and electrical systems.
President Joko Widodo personally reviewed the construction progress, describing the mosque as a symbol of Nusantara’s spirituality — open, tolerant, and modern.
“The IKN National Mosque is not merely a house of worship but a space for spiritual reflection — a symbol of harmony and diversity in Nusantara.” — I Nyoman Nuarta
